‘Sheeptown’ a northern dialect of Skipton, is recorded in the Domesday book of 1086. The bustling market town is home to the medieval Skipton castle built in 1090. The Leeds Liverpool canal opened towards the end of the 1700’s to bring coal, corn and wool to the many mills of Skipton and the North of England.
Today the town is proud of its heritage. Not only is it steeped in history, it is also situated at the gateway to the Yorkshire Dales National Park. Over 800 square miles (1,300 km²), rolling hills of extraordinary natural beauty, and diverse wildlife.
An annual national survey by Rightmove, invariably places Skipton on the podium as the happiest place to live in the UK. This could be down to the fact that as well as being on the doorstep of the Yorkshire Dales National Park, Skipton boasts a multitude of coffee shops, tearooms, restaurants, traditional pubs micro-breweries and shops of all kinds. This is an area of the UK well worth discovering. Once you visit Skipton, you won’t want to leave.
